Community members in Baxter came together for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new subdivision off of Mopar Road near Highway 56 Wednesday.
D.R. Horton Division President Danny Clawson said that his team wanted to bring this 80 home subdivision to meet a community need for housing. He said that he hopes to continue a partnership with the town for future development.
“I hope this is just a seed,” Clawson said. “So hopefully we’ll continue to grow here in Baxter, Cookeville, this whole eastside of the Nashville area we want to continue to grow and bring the dreams of new homeownership to a reality.”
Baxter Mayor John Martin said that with Baxter constantly growing, this will be a huge benefit for the town and the county. He said that this is one project in a pipeline of some 500 projected homes in development for the town. Mayor Randy Porter said that this aids local folks with a current issue with a housing shortage.
“I hear of local, newly-married couples who are looking to try to buy a house and they can’t because they’re getting outbid by all the people who are moving from other places. This is going to allow us an opportunity I think for the market to expand and for those folks to have the opportunity to buy a house. It is also for the tax rolls, property taxes, and everything, it’s going to be great. Any time Baxter does anything good it helps the county. ”
Porter said that he thinks it speaks to the appeal of Baxter and the way the community has grown.
Clawson said that despite some issues with weather and supply chains, the work has gone well since breaking ground in August of 2020. He said that homes are currently available for purchase.
