Baxter Codes Asking For More Compliance With City Signage Ordinance

Baxter Building and Codes Official Bob Lane is asking residents to be more compliant with city signage ordinances.

In a Thursday night Board of Alderman meeting, Lane said that he’s been having issues with folks putting signs where they shouldn’t be. He said Thursday morning he picked up an entire truckload of unlawfully placed signs.

“Everybody in the world is putting up signs in Baxter, and these aren’t campaign signs,” Lane said. “These are hiring signs or pressure washing signs or on and on and on. And we have an ordinance in Baxter that says you cannot put a sign on public right-of-way. The only people who can are the city or the state or something like that.”

However, Lane said that signs are allowed on private property.

He said the exception to the right-of-way rule is for campaign signs, but those cannot be less than 75 feet apart.

“These old things they don’t come pick them up,” Lane said. “And they get into our bush hogs and our mowers and they’re a real problem. So there may be some people crying about signs. I’ve got banners and signs piled up out by the dumpster and steel posts. (…) I know a lot’s going out right now but it’s just a mess.”
