Baxter Aldermen Approve LED Street Light Project

The Baxter Board of Aldermen approved an LED street light project during Tuesday’s meeting.

Mayor John Martin said Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (UCEMC) will install LED bulbs in about 200 street lights.

“It’ll take care of out interstate lighting also. Of course, they’ve got to work with TDOT on that to make sure it’s the right type of light for that area,” Martin said. “That will brighten up our interstate and all of our streets.”

The city decided to move forward with the project after UCEMC conducted a pilot project earlier this year. Martin said the LED changeover will bring a considerable cost savings to the town.

“The cost savings is to Upper Cumberland Electric also,” Martin said. “As far as them having to take care of the lighting. If you have a problem with the light on any street, it costs them to come out and repair it. The longevity of this LED lighting is much greater than what it currently is. It’s a much more efficient light.”

Martin said he expects the project to get underway in the near future.
