Death Reported At Local Hotel

Cookeville Police investigating a death at a local hotel. Police responded to the call Monday afternoon at the Alpine Lodge and Suites on Spring Street. The individual was dead when police arrived. Police spokesman Lt. Bobby Anderson said officials do not believe foul play was involved. Read More »

Smith County Man Arrested On Incest, Rape Charges

A Smith County man faces charges of incest and rape of a child under 13 years of age. Larry E. Gentry was arrested September 18. Gentry’s wife allegedly discovered pictures and videos on his phone, leading to the charges. Gentry’s bond has been set at $450,000. If he posts bond, he may not have any contact or any minor child. Monterey Lions Team Heads To Puerto Rico

The Monterey Lions Club Disaster Response Team has another mission. Team members have partnered with StormPoint and are headed to Puerto Rico to help people recover from Hurricane Maria. The volunteer team has been on the road virtually nonstop since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in early September. They’ve also deployed to Florida to help with Hurricane Irma recovery. Read More »

Shooting Sports Park Ground Broken

Residents of Cumberland County’s Albert Frye Road picketed the official groundbreaking of the new Shooting Sports Park Monday morning. Residents have said noise and traffic from the $2.2 million Shooting Sports Park will ruin their quality of life. Tesla Supercharger Opening In Cookeville

A Tesla Supercharging station will soon open at Cookeville’s Jackson Plaza. Plaza representatives repeatedly refused comment, citing Tesla policies. Tesla is known for its all-electric vehicles. The company has begun offering more charging stations to meet demand.   Read More »

Ryan Finalist For Teacher Of The Year

The Tennessee Department of Education will announce its Teacher of the Year this week. Rebecca Ryan is the Upper Cumberland finalist for the honor. Last year, Ryan taught math at White County High School. Over the summer she was named principal at White County’s Findlay Elementary. There are nine finalists for the honor. The Putnam County Library will celebrate Banned Books Week with reading. Interim Librarian Phil Schaller: “Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read, it’s typically held during the last week in September, and it highlights the value of free and open access to information,” Schaller said. Abandoned Building Burns In DeKalb

An early morning fire destroyed an abandoned home on DeKalb County’s Magness Road Monday. Firefighters said the blaze was reported shortly after 3 a.m. The cause of the fire was unknown at this time. Officials are investigating who owns the property and what started the fire. Read More »
