April Showers Bring May… Bugs?

With the warmer weather, people start to stay outside longer. Those spending time outdoors should protect themselves from tick and mosquito-borne illnesses.

Lisa Bumbalough directs health at the Putnam County Health Department.

“Warmer weather is here and many people are spending more time outdoors,” Bumbalough said. “So we need to be proactive and be aware and prevent any of these mosquito and tick bites.”

Bumbalough said ticks and mosquitos thrive in warm weather.

“Ticks are more active in the warmer months, such as April through September,” Bumbalough said. “And we see many causes of tick-borne illnesses around this time as it starts to peak, such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and ehrlichiosis to name just a few.”

Those outdoors should take precaution by using repellant, Bumbalough said.

“Right now we want to use insect repellants, such as DEET and picaridin and even oil of lemon eucalyptus is really good,” Bumbalough said. “And reapply that as directed, follow the label recommendations. But you can also wear long loose like clothing that prevents bites through the fabric.”

Bumbalough said everyone should use the repellants as directed, especially on small children.

People should reduce the mosquitos population around their houses as well, Bumbalough said.

“And it’s very important right now that we that we reduce mosquito populations around our homes, Bumbalough said. “Mosquitos can breed in places that hold water, including clogged gutters, drains, empty bowls or even empty bottles laying around.”
