American Legion Hosting High School Oratorical Contest

The American Legion Post 46 is hosting one of five constitutional oratorical contests in the state on Saturday morning.

Post Member Richard Buford said that our region has the most high school students signed up for this year’s contest that he’s ever seen.

“I think the word got out that this is a wonderful opportunity,” Buford said. “To learn very valuable life skills about getting out in front of people and speaking, and to learn about the Constitution of the United States.”

Buford said that the oratorical contest will begin at 10 a.m. He said that the winner of this contest will go to the Middle Tennessee Region in February.

Buford said that contest has the opportunity to compete at the state level for the chance to win up to $30,000 in scholarships.

“We do invite the public to come and attend this to listen to the students give their speech,” Buford said. “We’ll have some veterans there, I’m sure some of the students’ teachers will be there and their families. This is just a wonderful event that the community should be proud of.”
