Alvin C. York State Park Demonstrating Farming Traditions At Field Day

Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park is taking people back in time, demonstrating traditional farming during its Field Day on Saturday.

Park Manager Nate Dodson said the annual event shows people the way of life back in the 1920’s when Sergeant Alvin York tended the land.

“One of our coolest demonstrations we’ve got going is we have a blacksmith shop,” Dodson said. “Of course, Sergeant himself was a blacksmith, so we will be demonstrating that as well as making apple butter, sorghum, milling corn and have some old-time music.”

Dodson said the state park has been growing corn and sorghum this summer for the event. Dodson said participants can see the crops harvested and then made into molasses.

Dodson said demonstrations begin at 10:00 a.m. and last until 3:00 p.m. Dodson said other tours will be available across the park to get the full historic experience.
