Algood’s 20-year-old wooden welcome signs will have to remain for now.
City officials received one $82,000 bid for a new welcome sign, which city council declined. Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said she’s disappointed in the project’s progress.
“We are so proud of our city and want to project a welcoming and positive image, and of course signage is one way to accomplish that goal,” Chapman-Fowler said.
Chapman-Fowler said she hopes to rebid the project in the next several months. She said she hoped a local sign company might be interested. Chapman-Fowler said the new signs will be brick and mortar, similar to the one at city hall.
The city wants to add two signs, one at Highway 111 South from the Overton County side, and the other off of Main Street.
Chapman-Fowler said the current signs were great for the time they were installed, but she thinks the city deserves better.
“Naturally we think that we can get lovely signs that are similar to the one that we have at city hall,” Chapman-Fowler said. “We actually just want to incorporate the city seal as well as have some solar lighting.”
