Algood Working To Weatherproof White Plains Home

Some upgrades will soon be made to the White Plains Historic Home in Algood.

City Administrator Keith Morrison said the work will help preserve the home for future generations.

“We don’t want to lose the condition of the house, so we want to work to make sure we’re protecting it from the weather,” Morrison said. “I think the house has a lot of potential for us in the future. As we continue to work on this, I think it will be a real draw for our community.”

The Algood City Council will consider applying for a $50,000 historic grant during next week’s city council meeting. Morrison said the city would use the funding for exterior upgrades at the house.

“We’re doing some column work and painting right now to try to fix some of the things to the outside of the house before it deteriorates,” Morrison said. “We’re trying to get the house weatherproofed before it gets in any worse condition.”

Algood purchased the White Plains Home for $250,000 in April 2018.

The antebellum home has a unique history as Putnam County’s earliest center of commerce, its first seat of government and an important stop along the Old Walton Road. In 2009 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
