Algood Wine Referendum Next Steps Will Head To City Council

Algood residents voted in favor of a wine in grocery stores referendum Tuesday night

City Administrator Keith Morrison said the next step will be to take the issue before the city council.

“So we’ll have to put in a model code that allows basically for a net inspection fee and wine licenses on retail food stores and create an application for certificate that they’ll have to fill out,” “So there will be a few things that we’ll have to do to validate the process.”

Morrison said that because the referendum is the will of the people, he does not foresee the possibility of the ordinance not passing. In addition, he said allowing for the sale of wine in grocery stores will increase the revenue coming into the city.

“It’ll produce more sales at stores and so it’ll generate some revenue that will come back to the city,” Morrison said. “So we’re anticipating this will continue to increase our revenue and allow us to continue to grow.”

Morrison said the ordinance will go into effect two months after its passing. He said he believes wine will be available for sale shortly after that.
