Algood has found a new location for its radio communications allowing the downtown water tank removal to begin next month.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said city and county emergency workers communicate through a radio station on the water tank. Morrison said it will move to Loftis Drive.
“All of that is moving forward, and we’re shooting for an August 15th date to have the new site operational and be able to take down the elevated tank in the middle of town,” Morrison said.
Morrison said the water tank is currently not in use for water due to its low elevation. Morrison said it would not make sense financially to raise the water tank and continue maintaining the infrastructure.
“In order to make it useful, we would have to spend a whole lot of money to make it taller,” Morrison said. “The other option is for it to remain out of use, but it would need maintenance to keep it from being a concern of safety of falling over. It needs to be painted, and the rust scrapped off to just keep it standing there. It felt like it was an expensive billboard to have it standing there.”
Morrison said the contract for removal has been awarded. Morrison said the company would use a crane to lower the water tank piece by piece.
