Algood To Use $5K Donation For ADA Playground Equipment

City of Algood the recipient of a $5,000 donation from First Freedom Bank.

Parks and Recreation Director Roy Phipps said they will use the money to purchase ADA-compliant playground equipment for its new City Park. He said this has been a want for the park since it was in its early stages of formation.

“There are a lot of children in the community with different needs and they’re special children,” Phipps said. “And we want to provide recreational opportunities for them that they might not get in other places.”

Phipps said now that they have the funding, they are able to start the process of looking for the right equipment. He said for certain ADA playground equipment, it can cost up to $200,000. He said they appreciate the donation to help them get a head start.

Phipps said he has explored wheelchair-accessible swings and park resurfacing that won’t affect the static of hearing aids. He said they want to create a place where a child, a young adult, and the elderly can enjoy options within the park system.

“We’re extremely thankful to First Freedom Bank,” Phipps said. “Kenny Beavers is over there and is really good to us. And Rachel Honaker, she works here at the local branch. She’s been super good to us not only through the bank but she also volunteers her personal time with our event committee here in the city. So she’s been a real help and benefit to the city. We’re really grateful to help from First Freedom.”
