The fate of Algood’s water tower will be discussed during a September 12 town hall meeting.
Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the previous town hall meeting raised good questions about the tower.
“So now we have had the tank inspected and we have a report,” Fowler said. “And we want to reveal the results of that report to everyone at the next town hall meeting.”
Fowler said the city would pay approximately $30,000 to tear down the tank, but repainting can cost anywhere from $54,000 to $100,000.
“Well I certainly hope that everyone comes away with a better understanding of what it means to Algood, number one, in reference to keeping it,” Fowler said. “And number two the expense involved in keeping it.”
Fowler said some individuals and groups may wish to raise funding for repainting the water tower.
“But it is the people’s water tower. I mean, yes, it belongs to the city of Algood, but what is the City of Algood? It is the people that live in Algood,” Fowler said. “So that is why I am so keen on these town meetings, is because I want people to know before we make decisions that affect them.”
The town hall meeting will take place on September 12 at 6:00 PM.
