The Algood Police Department will participate in the National Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday.
Chief Dale Armour said Algood allows residents to drop-off old medications year-round.
“Every day of the week that the city hall is open we actually have a secure bin where residents can drop off old medicine at any time. Just walk in the lobby and drop it off. We packaged it up and shipped off to an incendiary.”
Armour said the department will keep Algood City Hall open for the event.
“On Saturday, we are going to take part in the initiative with the DEA and other surrounding departments. And we are going to have the city hall open on Saturday from 10 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon,” Armour said. “And we will be doing exactly the same thing. Bins are available, people can walk in and discard any old medicines.”
Armour said the drug take-back days allow the department to inform the city about what they offer.
“We usually average about two 30-gallon sized barrels each Saturday we do this for about four hours,” Armour said. “So I am anticipating about the same thing if the weather is good.”
Armour said drug take-backs benefit locals as well as the nation.
“Nationwide the benefit is we are not dumping old medicines into our water system. You know a lot of people will flush old medicines in the commode and it gets in our water treatment plants,” Armour said. “And with all those different chemicals mixed in. This gives them the opportunity to dispose of them correctly. ”
Armour said he hopes the take-back will help cut down on personal crimes as well.
“Another thing to is a lot of times, medicine that is not being used is subject to thieves. They will go in and take medicines they know somebody has medicine or whatever.”
The Algood Police Department is one of several participating, including Sparta, Monterey, and Tennessee Tech Police Departments.
