Algood Paving Project to Use Heavy Grade Asphalt

Heavy-grade asphalt and thermoplastic striping will protect Algood Main Street from traffic wear and tear.

That according to City Manager Keith Morrison.

“One of the things that will be looked at in addition is at Walmart it will be a higher grade pavement for the heavy truck traffic. It is probably not noticed, but if you drive into the Dollar Tree and around Fast-Pace,” Morrison said. “There are sections of that parking lot that are considered heavy grade asphalt. Which have a higher tar content and a better tack quality. They hold together better under heavy traffic.”

Heavy-grade asphalt cuts down on damage to the road, especially in areas with high truck traffic, Morrison said.

Mayor Kirk Dyer said the project will contain most of Main Street.

“This paving project would encompass from the city limits at Burton Branch road through the light at Walmart and down just past Sonic,” Dyer said. “Which would include all of the milling work, the repaving, putting new loops in for the lights, striping. And that striping also would extend the entire length of Main Street, from west to east.”

The paving will end at Thompson Lane, Dyer said.

Algood City Council awarded the paving bid to Roger’s Group in the amount of approximately 380 thousand dollars.

Originally, Algood budgeted 330 thousand dollars for the paving project.

“We added a little bit of length to the project. We also added thermoplastic for the entire length of Main Street, from 111 to 111,” Morrison said. “And then we additionally added a hundred thousand dollars in the general fund for paving. Which gives us a total for paving at 430 thousand dollars.”

Only Roger’s Group bid on the project but an engineer ran the numbers to confirm the bid came in below average prices, Morrison said.

Dyer said other paving projects remain on the council’s list, including Elm Street.
