The City of Algood will look at requiring permits for short-term rental properties.
City Manager Keith Morrison said the permit system keeps short-term rentals out of residential neighborhoods.
“Short-term rental properties will not be allowed in R1 or R2 and then permitting requirements where they go through fire inspections each year,” Morrison said. “And they meet all the codes of the City of Algood. This new code is from the Planning Commission with a positive recommendation.”
Mayor Lisa Chapman-Fowler said the increased popularity of Airbnb and VRBO should be brought to the city’s attention.
“Those type of things we need to address because they are becoming more popular. We just want to make sure that they run in a way that is best for our city,” Chapman-Fowler said. “And they meet all permitting requirements.”
Morrison said the short-term rental permits mirror Cookeville’s requirements.
“It’s adding these rental property guidelines to R3, Rd, CA, and CB. These are the zonings this will be allowed in,” Morrison said. “It is added to the permit process to make sure that the property is inspected and remains to keep up with those. And they continue to permit and collect taxes on it and stuff of that nature.”
The Algood City Council approved the first reading of the ordinance Tuesday.
