Monterey Mayor Nathan Walker has passed away after a recent stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
Alderman Bill Wiggins said it feels as though a pall is over the town of Monterey Wednesday morning. Walker has served as an Alderman since 2014 and was recently elected as Mayor.
“What he brought to the table as a leader in the town of Monterey, it’s going to be very very hard to bring that up to tempo,” Wiggins said. “Because of his leadership quality, he had great vision, he had the ability to anticipate.”
Wiggins called Walker “brilliant,” with a penchant for numbers and the ability to create wise policies to move the town of Monterey forward. Wiggins said when he was Mayor, he would appoint Walker to be the mastermind behind every budget.
Wiggins said he remembers when Walker first arrived to Monterey several years ago. He said Walker rolled up his sleeves and jumped right into the downtown revitalization project and began his to show his love and dedication for Monterey. Wiggins said he’ll always remember Walker’s good nature.
“He was always a contributor. He always had something of value to add,” Wiggins said. “I’m not sure the town of Monterey really realizes what high value this man had for this town and what we were able to do.”
Wiggins said he knew Nathan had many bright ideas to help progress Monterey and improve the town for the community. Wiggins said while Walker didn’t have a chance to write them all down, he hope they can continue his legacy using the ideas he initiated.
