Achieve New Year’s Resolutions with Consistency

With a New Year comes the opportunity for self-reflection and New Year’s resolutions. But how can you turn resolutions into achievable goals?

Mental Health Cooperative Case Manager Rachel Hash said consistency may help New Year’s resolutions stick.

Some may find New Year’s resolutions hard to keep throughout the year.

“Just consistently reminding themselves daily. Like ‘Okay I’ve set this goal for me. Let me continue or let me do what I can every day to accomplish that goal,'” Hash said. “Maybe putting little reminders around the house. You know there is one thing I do for me is I set a daily reminder on my phone to remind me like ‘Hey this is a goal for me. I need to remember I am working on this.'”

Hash said New Year’s resolutions need to come from the desires and goals of individuals. No one can pick a resolution for someone else.

“The person needs to want to do that. If its someone that we are working with, we can’t really force them,” Hash said. “But we can help them set that goal for them and just give them a little background as to why.”

Hash said life can get in the way of succeeding the goals.

“You know, there are a few lucky ones that will succeed,” Hash said. “But the majority of them do stop after just a few months or they just don’t make it to succeed.”

Overall, Hash said she believes setting goals is a healthy habit.
