Jail Bond Petition Gets Required Signatures

The DeKalb County Elections Commission verified and certified some 1,500 resident petition signatures.

Residents wanted the bond to construct a Justice Center and Jail sent to referendum. Dekalb County Administrator of Elections Dustin Estes said the petition will now go to County Executive Matt Adcock and the county commission.

“We did bring in one extra person for one day just to help get us over the hill,” Estes said. “But we were able to pull it off, we had 15 calendar days from the date that received it and we actually hit the required number of verified signatures on day four.”

The election commission had 15 days to verify at least 1,361 signatures. Estes said the election commission made the petition a top priority. The commission met Monday and certified the signatures. Commissioners must vote on whether the referendum will appear on the ballot in the November election.

“It does take a resolution,” Estes said. “An election resolution from the county commission to instruct the election commission to place it on the ballot.”

Estes said the county commission could take the bond proposal down without sending it to referendum.

“They could decide to let the bond die with no effect,” Estes said.

Estes said the petition had up to 2,500 signatures but would only verify all of them if it was needed.
