Cumberland County Film Society Shows Films Worth Talking About

The Cumberland County Film Society is entering its 21st year.

Founder and President Margie Buxbaum said that she started the society as a way to watch more films that she was interested in. She said that since its inception, the film society has grown to almost 1,000 members.

“We show movies worth talking about, that’s sort of our subtitle,” Buxbaum said. “We show movies that can have a good discussion, that are educational, that are entertaining, and we like to find movies that have some sort of critical acclaim.”

Buxbaum said that the film society shows a variety of genres, from documentaries to foreign films. She said that after the screenings at the Rocky Top Theatre, the group will learn background information of the movies, as well as facilitate group discussion through Q&A’s.

Buxbaum said that the society does showings on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. She said that every so often, they also will host screenings free to the public.
