Major roads are clear Thursday morning with patches of slush, especially bridges, overpasses, and exit ramps after overnight snow.
Secondary roads are slushy to snow covered and very icy, especially in areas that saw freezing rain and drizzle at the end of the snow. Two to four inches of snow fell overnight across the Upper Cumberland with three inches most common.
Areas east of a line from Centertown in Warren County to Monterey to Clarkrange have been above freezing most of the night and have seen more rain and freezing rain. At one point overnight, I-40 eastbound in Cumberland County closed because of icing.
Putnam County Emergency Management reported roads overnight snow covered in most areas of the county. The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department asked citizens to not travel unless it is an emergency until crews have a chance to work on the roads.
Those areas east of that line are showing power outages, as of 5am Thursday morning. Volunteer Energy reporting outages in southeastern Overton county, northeastern Putnam Co. Outages are limited at this hour….but it is early and many are not up.
Meantime, UCEMC made more progress Wednesday evening returning power before the snow hit. The number of customers without power in Jackson County was reduced to 500. County Mayor Randy Heady said crews got the New Salem Line back up returning power to Flynns Lick toward Granville.
In Overton County, power outages are down to 1,800.
Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said late Wednesday, UCEMC made significant progress even from his 5pm update. Some 4,000 residents remain without power.
“They are still having issues with Pippin Rd, Kuykendall Rd, Thomas Allen, Zeb Warren, Village Rd, Deerhaven Subdivision, Mirandy Rd, Bear Creek Rd, South Bangham and Hilham Rd, parts of Dodson Branch Rd, Nashville Hwy and all the roads off of it, parts of Baxter City and parts of Algood City,” Porter said.
Cookeville Electric reported less than 100 outages now with most in the Park Village area.
It is not known if the overnight snow, sleet and freezing rain will create more issues for UCEMC.
