Terry Dewayne Barnes, age 64 of Sparta, passed away Tuesday morning July 7, 2020 at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Dr. Gordon Eugene Hunter, age 89, passed away at his home on Saturday, July 4, 2020. Gordon was born July 17, 1930 at Sharon, PA to Gordon Leroy and Dorothy Melissa (nee Smith) Hunter. He graduated from James Ford Rhodes HS, Cleveland, OH, June 11, 1948 where he was an All-State wrestler, ran cross-country, and participated in gymnastics. After serving in the Air Force, he attended Mississippi College, where he met Gene Anne Morris, the love of his life and wife of 61 wonderful years. He wrote in a letter to her, “You were 20 when we met. I think I’ll never forget that snaggle-toothed smile that sent my heart reeling and deep inside I had the feeling you were the one for me.” Gordon and Gene Anne were married on December 20, 1955 at Gene Anne’s home church, First Baptist Church, Sparta, IL. They both graduated college with honors in 1956. After graduation, they spent 2 years teaching English and Biology on Guam where Morris was born, spent 1 year teaching general science in Hoopeston, IL where Mark was born, and was accepted for a National Science Foundation program to work on a master’s degree in science at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, where Steven was born. Gordon completed a Ph.D at Washington University then taught 4 years at Murray State University. In 1967 Tennessee Tech hired Gordon as the Biology Department Chairman, where he taught until retirement in 1995. A beloved teacher, in 1990 Dr. Hunter was awarded “Tennessee Professor of the Year.” The family will have a memorial service at a later date. John Dorian, 94 of Cookeville, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2020, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. John was born Friday, April 9, 1926, in New York. John lived in Cookeville for 25 plus years. He enjoyed meeting people, having conversations, and traveling. John loved country music, especially the guitar, and was known to perform in his younger days. John chose cremation, his close friends followed his wishes, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Frances Howard Officer, age 93 of Sparta, will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, July 8, 2020 in the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in the Old Zion Cemetery. Bro. Paul Allen will officiate the services. She passed away Monday Morning, July 6, 2020 at the NHC of Sparta. She was born May 17, 1927 in White County, Tennessee to the late Turney and Roxann Walker Howard. Mrs. Edna was also preceded in death by her husband: Clifford Officer, son: Charles Officer, and brothers: Robert, Sam, Hershell, and Gaines Howard. She was a long time member of the Almyra Methodist Church. Survivors include: Son Larry Officer & Brenda of Sparta; Daughters Anita Verble & Jerry of Murfreesboro, Donna Johnson & Wayne of Rock Island and Betty Cooley and Louis of Smyrna The family will receive friends from 10 am until Service time on Wednesday.
Funeral Services for Mr. David Charles Auberson, age 72, of Rickman will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2020 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home in Livingston. Bro. Matt Tuttle will officiate. Burial to follow in the Good Hope Cemetery. The family will welcome friends on Tuesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at Speck Funeral Home. Mr. Auberson passed from this life on Saturday, July 4, 2020 from the Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was born September 16, 1947 in Overton County to the late Homer & Ova Auberson. Baptist in Faith, Mr. Auberson enjoyed being outdoors, and helping his wife around the house. He also enjoyed to fix and repair things, and was a hard worker. His wife and family was the joy of his life. He leaves behind his loving wife Betty Jean Cox Auberson of Rickman; daughter, Tammy Collins & husband Daniel of Livingston; sons, Donnie Auberson of Rickman, Mark Auberson & wife Kerstin of Byrdstown, and Jeffery Auberson of Rickman; 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Ronnie Auberson & wife Billie of Livingston. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, June Scantland.
Funeral services for Mr. Donald Ogletree, age 82 of Livingston, will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 2 PM from the chapel of the Hall Funeral Home of Livingston with burial to follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Mr. Donald Felix Ogletree was born in Livingston, Overton Co., TN to the late Felix and Mildred (Savage) Ogletree. Donald worked road construction and was a member of the Swallows Chapel Church of Christ. He loved his family very much and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
