Baxter Board of Aldermen and Mayor Accepts Name Change

The City of Baxter’s governing board will now be known as the City Council.

Mayor John Martin said the new identity will help members connect with younger generations.

“And why we did that. It’s that a lot of the younger generation, really if you say something about an alderman, they don’t have a clue,” Martin said. “But they can relate to councilmen and that is one big reason why we did that.”

Martin said the charter change will not affect the normal business of the board.

“We had to go before the legislatures and they voted to approve this. We mentioned a long time ago that we are going to change from aldermen to councilmen,” Martin said. “So our aldermen are now councilmen.”

The Board of Aldermen and Mayor accepted the new title Tuesday.
