Women’s Right to Vote Honored in Livingston

The 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote will be honored Tuesday in Livingston.

Churches, schools and individuals are asked to ring their bell at 1:00 PM in Livingston. Livingston Civics and Garden Club President Robbie Melton said her group will honor this special anniversary the way it should have been honored in 1920.

“When the 19th amendment passed there were bells that rang all across the country, but not so much in Tennessee, and so we would like to make up for that mistake,” Melton said.

Teachers from A.H. Roberts Elementary are ringing bells in Livingston to honor the centennial of the 19th amendment. Melton said Former Governor Robert’s role in the 19th amendment is important to Tennessee history.

“Governor Roberts was instrumental in getting the 19th amendment passed in Tennessee,” Melton said.

There is a second event honoring women’s right to vote this week in Livingston. Melton said at 7:00 AM on Saturday, August 22nd, there is a march to the courthouse annex. The march will start at Governor A.H. Robert’s law office in Livingston.

Melton said there will be social distancing and masks being worn, she also asked for a certain historical accessory.

“Yellow roses was what was worn by the supporters,” Melton said.

However, Melton said you do not have to wear a yellow rose or dress in white if you would like to participate. A direct descendant of former Governor Roberts is set to speak at the march on Saturday.
