White County Sheriff Supports Birth Control Order

The White County Sheriff’s Department supports a local judge’s order offering sterilization or birth control to inmates in exchange for lighter sentences.

White County Sheriff Oddie Shoupe released a statement through Public Information Officer Det. Chris Isom Thursday.

“Quote, I do support this voluntary program because it gives the participants the chance to get their lives straight without unexpected financial burdens to deal with. It complements the already existing programs in place to help inmates get back into productive lives,” Isom said.

Regional media reported Wednesday that Judge Sam Benningfield issued an order in May offering to shave 30 days from the sentence of White County inmates that volunteer to have a vasectomy or a birth control implant.
