White County Schools Holding Meeting To Prepare Parents For Kindergarten

White County Schools will hold their fall Kindergarten Ready Meeting Monday to give parents the tools to give kids a smooth transition into schools.

Cyndi Vickers is District K-2 Reading and Math Instructional Coach. She said the meetings urge parents to speak positively to their children about the start of school. Vickers said encouraging learning and meeting new people can turn a child’s anxiety into excitement.

“It really is a positive step in their life and it is definitely a milestone that is very special to each and every parent,” Vickers said. “So that’s something that they can talk up to their child and give them the confidence that it is going to be a great experience for them.”

Vickers said the fall meeting will be focused on how parents can help their children develop their reading skills. The district will hold another meeting in the spring that introduces children to math concepts. Vickers said she aims to help parents calm the nerves of children, many of whom are heading into the biggest change of their young lives.

“Sometimes just a change of environment from their day-to-day can be difficult,” Vickers said. “But again, that’s why the program gives them time, and most of the people bring their children with them so they’re able to go ahead and participate and practice with the materials during the session.”

The meeting will be held at the White County School Board building at 6pm on Monday.

Vickers said many parents are uncertain of how to get their children prepared. Attendees will receive teaching materials to take home and ease their child into concepts they will be learning when the school year begins.

“I think every parent wants their kid to have the best start and we just feel like this is something that, as a district, we can do to help them,” Vickers said.
