White Co. Commission Approves TDEC Matching Funds, Honors Culley

White County Commission approved matching funds for TDEC Water Infrastructure during its Monday meeting.

County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said that the money will be spent in next year’s budget. He said that this approval allows him to go to the utility district to discuss the County Commission’s commitment to water infrastructure projects.

“Because I need to start getting those projects in so that we as a group can then start looking at them and approving them,” Robinson said. “The longer we wait the farther behind in line we get.”

Robinson said that the funds will come from American Rescue Plan funding.

In other business, County Commission approved a resolution naming the White County Recreational Complex in honor of White Countian David Culley.

Culley is a Sparta native with a prolific football career, including playing for Vanderbilt as the first African-American quarterback in the school’s history and most recently serving as head coach for the Houston Texans.

“He’s always been in this community, always comes back every summer, he’s got a house here, and he’s got a good, great family and things like that,” Culley’s nephew Chris Brewington said. “As a person, he’s just a normal, average guy. He’s just outstanding, got a good personality, and would do anything to help the community out.”

Commission Chair Stanley Neal said that they originally started looking at this honor in October. He said that it was his suggestion to honor Culley.

“Something like that, when you have all that coaching and the ability to train young people up to using their athletic abilities to the best that they can be, that’s someone that we need to recognize,” Neal said.
