What To Do When TBI Issues Blue Alerts

Two Blue Alerts were issued by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in two days, but what does that mean?

Baxter Police Chief Danny Holmes said that the notification indicates a police officer has been killed, seriously injured, or has gone missing in the line of duty.

“Dial 911 and let the dispatcher know, ‘Hey I have come across the suspect or the suspect’s car,’ and let law enforcement handle it,” Holmes said. “You never approach them on your own, because they are dangerous.”

One alert was issued about the attempted murder of Hendersonville Officer Cameron Ferrell. The second alert was issued for a suspect wanted by TBI and the Erin Police Department for Attempted First Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer.

Holmes said this is the first time in his memory he’s received a Blue Alert since they were established in 2011. According to TBI, these were established in order to have a system to rapidly disseminate information in hopes of getting public assistance for these situations.
