Obituaries For Tuesday, March 5

Harold Scott, 62 of Sparta, Tennessee passed away on Monday, March 4, 2019, at his home surrounded by family. He was born March 21, 1956 in Sparta, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mildred Scott. He was a mechanic. He loved working on cars, bonfires, beer, and spending time with his friends. He was a loving man. The family has chosen cremation. The family will be having a private memorial at a later date.

Funeral services for James Lynn “Jim” Finley, age 66, of Cookeville will be held Wednesday, March 6th, 2019 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Presley Funeral Home with Robert Gribble officiating. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery in the Lilly Dale Community of Clay County. Jim passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville. He was born Saturday, August 23, 1952 in Dearborn, Michigan to Lillie Mae Hitchcock Finley Jager and the late James Alpha Finley. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Presley Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Oscar B. Phillips, age 79, of Baxter will be held Thursday, March 7th, 2019 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Presley Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Allen officiating. Interment will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery in Overton County. Oscar B. Phillips passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019 at NHC HealthCare in Cookeville. He was born Saturday, November 18, 1939 in Rickman to the late Robert Lee Phillips and Lizzie Mae Johnson Phillips. Oscar B. was a member of Lilly’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Lowe’s Lumber Company. In addition to his parents, Oscar B. Phillips was preceded in death by: wife, Shirley Ann Lewis Phillips; two infant brothers, JV Phillips and Willie D. Phillips; brothers, Tilbert Lee Phillips and Billy B. Phillips; two infant sisters, Anna V. Phillips and Bonnie Lou Phillips; sister, Florence Phillips Brown. He is survived by: daughters, Mary Beth Phillips of Baxter, Betty Ann (James) Solomon of Gainesboro; son, Jody Mayberry of Baxter; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Hobert (Faye) Phillips of Rickman; two sisters, Lou Ann (Billy) Peek of Algood, and Pearlene (Billy) Crowe of Baxter; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Thursday, March 7, 2019, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Presley Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Mr. Willie Franklin “Bill” Shelton, age 88 of Sweetwater, formerly of Sparta, will be conducted 1:00pm Thursday, March 7, 2019 from the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial in New Bon Air Cemetery. Bill passed away Monday, March 4, 2019 at his residence. Bill was born July 30, 1930 in White County to the late John Henry Shelton and Oma Mosley Shelton. He had an active work career that included owning and operating his own trucking company, rock quarry work, welder and owning a sporting goods store. Bill raised champion coon hunting dogs and most recently Beagle dogs. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by siblings Patricia Shelton, Raynell Shelton, Virginia Lorene Prater, Lloyd Shelton, Gerald Shelton, Azilkie Gilliam and Sanford Lee Shelton. Survivors include his three daughters Joyce Brooks, Brenda Shelton and Roxanne Shelton (Douglas) Balek; Grandchildren: James Winnett, Michelle Cole, Kim Allen, Jason Stephenson, Starr Dillman, Kenneth Dillman, Michael Shelton and Billy Shelton; 12 great-grandchildren; Two great-great-grandchildren; Brother: Robert “Bob” Shelton; Two sisters: Lynda Shelton Strough and Wanda Lackey. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11:00am until service time at Hunter Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hunter Funeral Home, PO Box 90, Sparta, TN 38583 to help the family with funeral expenses.

The celebration of Life for Frances Evalene (Phillips) Smith, 88 of Cookeville, will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019, at 1:00 pm from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home with Bro. Keith Tosh officiating. Frances passed from this life on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family. Frances was born Friday, August 8, 1930, in Jackson County, and she was the daughter of the late Millard and Ova (Young) Phillips. Frances was a loving daughter, mother, granny, and friend. She retired from McCord Winn with 38 years of service. Frances was a member of Central Emmanuel Baptist Church for many years and was currently attending Life Church of Cookeville. She will be greatly missed. Frances is survived by: Daughter: Joyce Smith; 4 Grandchildren: Jeff and Trish Smith, Scott and Lindsey Smith, Mitchell Smith, and Wade England; 8 Great Grandchildren: Heather Smith, Heidi Smith, Holly Smith, Wade England, Jr., Jack England, Jacob Smith, Kelsey Smith, and Tucker Smith; Companion: Toby “Blue Diamond”; A host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by Son, Glen Smith; 3 Sisters, Daffo Allen, Effie Masters, and Jossie Smith; 3 Brothers, Earnest Phillips, Odell “Boots” Phillips, and Roy Phillips; and Special Friend, AJ Lohorn. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Crest Lawn Funeral Home.
