Watering And Placement Will Keep Your Christmas Tree Alive

If you’re interested in a live Christmas tree, you can purchase it this week.

But, what do you look for? Lyna Pennycuff is one of the family founders of Sycamore Springs Farm in Jamestown. She said the needles are the first indication of a good tree.

“For a live tree, they will last if you choose wisely,” Pennycuff said. “You don’t want to choose one that’s dry. If its already shedding its needles and looks dry, than it is and it’s not going to last you.”

Pennycuff said to gently run your hand through the needles. Pennycuff said of the needles bounce back, you have a healthy Christmas tree.

Once the tree gets home, Pennycuff said watering and placement will keep it alive for weeks. Pennycuff said water daily and place your tree away from vents or furnaces to keep the needles.

“Right now is ideal,” Pennycuff said. “It seems like the past few years people are getting their tree earlier and earlier. We have our opening date the Saturday before Thanksgiving just because people want to buy their trees. ideally, I prefer to wait until Thanksgiving. We sold a bunch of trees their past Saturday.”

Pennycuff said if you purchase a live tree at a major retail store, it will likely not last until the new year. Pennycuff said those trees are often cut at least a month before they are for sale.
