Warren Shelter Receives 17 Dogs In Abuse Case

The Warren County Animal Control and Adoption Center has received 17 new dogs, the result of an animal abuse case.

Sidney Smith Stanton III and Arvilla Joyce Stanton arrested after some 141 animals, in various stages of abuse, were seized by police. That includes 66 head of cattle and 58 horses. Warren County Animal Control Director Sherri Bradley said the rescue was a team effort.

“We’re very grateful for all the services that came out,” Bradley said. “The volunteers, Darlin’ Farms and Horse Haven were two of the names that I recall took care of stuff and then the State Attorney for pursuing it and the Sheriff’s Office and the State Agriculture Department coming together to get, get it done.”

Sidney Stanton previously charged with animal abuse in 2013 for failing to feed his horses. Bradley says the dogs recovered from his property are being looked after and seem to be recovering from neglect.

“It’s just taken a little bit to realize that being petted is okay,” Bradley said. “But, nothing is mean-natured. They’re all pretty sweet dogs. So, hopefully we’ll get them all healed up and situated so they can find nice homes.”

The dogs add to an ever-increasing population at the animal control center, which Bradley says has seen an increase in pet surrenders due to economic conditions.

“Now we’re, you know, we hold roughly 40 adult animals and we have 129 in our custody right now,” Bradley said.
