Warren School System Applying For Electric Buses

Warren County Schools applying for an opportunity to get electric school buses.

Director of Schools Grant Swallows said the opportunity came about from a grant application through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He said the EPA identified priority rural districts, Warren County being one, to apply for up to 25 new electric buses,

“We know that in the next few years that we have to decrease emissions by a standard and ultimately this is a way that a lot of places are doing that,” Swallows said. “The school buses are a lot more expensive, but I believe in the near future you will see nationwide and maybe even worldwide that lots of people are moving to energy-efficient vehicles.”

Swallows said the EPA would provide up to $375,000 to put towards the purchase of a bus, and $20,000 towards the charging station. The Warren County School System applied for 10 school buses.

Swallows said the application process is still in the early stages, and they are still awaiting more information. He said once they hear back from the EPA, he believes the next steps will be to connect with providers, learn prices, and decide what to do.
