Warm Spell Before Weekend Snow Could Help Road Conditions

Accumulating snow on the way despite Friday temperatures reaching the 60’s.

Putnam County Road Supervisor Randy Jones said the warm spell before the snowfall means roadways may not be as impacted.

“Temperatures being up in the 60’s like it is today and tomorrow the asphalt and the ground temperatures are still warm,” Jones said. “It will take a little while for it to all change over and get cold enough for it to really freeze.”

Temperatures are expected to quickly fall into the 20’s Friday night, according to the National Weather Service. Jones said the dangerous intersections and high-incline roads will likely be salted.

“I hope if it does snow, it will be a pretty snow and just stick to the grass and everybody will be happy and not be hazard for those that are traveling,” Jones said.

Jones said higher elevations in the Monterey area that will experience colder temperatures could experience slicker conditions. Jones said he hopes for the majority of snow to melt off the roadways.

Jones said next week, the county road department will begin preparing for the warm season. Jones said he will top off salt supplies for next winter, store snow plows and begin pothole repairs shortly after.
