Waking To Rare White Christmas In UC

Upper Cumberland residents are waking up to the rare White Christmas Friday after several inches of snow fell around 9pm Thursday.

Road conditions are reported icy in most locations with more temperatures in the teens across the region. Crews in Overton County reported Highway 111 as a solid sheet of ice Thursday evening. Jackson County 911 reported dangerous driving conditions, especially in the southern part of the county.

Emergency Management reported multiples vehicles off Interstate 40 because of icy conditions between 10pm and Midnight Thursday.

The National Weather Service extended the Winter Weather Advisory through 3pm Friday as light snow showers remain possible through the early morning. With temperatures cold, roadways will remain icy. Temperatures will remain below freezing Christmas Day with wind chills in the single digits possible.

Any melting done by the sun Friday will likely refreeze overnight into Saturday morning making travel dangerous.
