Van Buren School Budget Nearly Completed

The Van Buren County School budget is on schedule for approval before the October 1 deadline.

During Tuesday’s County Commissioner meeting, School Director Cheryl Cole said the school district has met their three percent fund balance and Maintenance Of Effort.

“We’ve presented a budget here,” Cole said. “It’s been about two months ago and numbers are not matching up, which they’re not because we’ve had to make budget amendments to it and things like that.”

The Board of Education will meet Wednesday to consider these amendments before the county commission can begin discussions. County Executive Greg Wilson said the remainder of the county budget is accepted by the comptroller office.

“The main thing was our building maintenance fund,” Wilson said. “We had to make for our repairs and things of that nature that was inadvertently left out of the budget.”

Three amendments were brought before the Board of Alderman. The Hotel/Motel tax will remain at $107,000 to maintain the MOE; add $164,000 to other local revenues to replace lost revenue from the Hotel/Motel tax; and remove $80,000 from a teacher fund.

A special called county commission meeting is scheduled next Wednesday.
