The recycling program will continue in Van Buren County.
Despite a manufacturing company exploring the use of Van Buren County’s recycling center as a factory, Mayor Greg Wilson said it was never his intent to eliminate the program.
“It will stay there, yes,” Wilson said. “We were going to make adjustments if need be. We said we’d make adjustments to that or move it to a different location, but recycling will continue.”
Wilson told County Commissioners last month that the recycling center was not generating much revenue, so it made sense to pursue an opportunity to attract an interested company. He was given permission by Commissioners to move forward to negotiate with the anonymous manufacturer. A representative of the company visited the site last week.
“They just looked at it and took notes,” Wilson said. “They looked at a couple other sites, as well. That was about it. There was no ‘yes or no’ or ‘thumbs up or thumbs down’ or anything of that nature. It was just a consideration of the site.”
At the Commission meeting Wilson said the company is looking for a 10-year lease that would bring 30 jobs to Van Buren County. Wilson said the county now enters the “wait-and-see” phase of that project.
