Van Buren Elementary School Gym Floor To Be Replaced

Van Buren Elementary’s gym floor will be replaced thanks to federal COVID money.

Director of Schools Cheryl Cole said the school board’s spending plan includes the capital project.

“It’s rubberized right now,” Cole said. ‘We’ve had it for about 24 years. It’s past its life expectancy, and we’re hoping to put wood in. But, we’ll have to see how much money we have in ESSER right now. We should be able to do that.”

Cole said the district has until 2024 to make the project happen. Cole said she plans to meet with school principals to discuss project details and start soliciting for bids.

Cole said at least 20 percent of the some $2 million will address learning loss. Cole said the money would focus on salaries for new positions to assist in math, language arts and RTI programs.

Cole said HVAC upgrades for Spencer Elemantery School are also on the way. Cole said 14 classrooms will take advantage.

“We are concentrating on Kindergarten, fourth and fifth,” Cole said.
