Van Buren County officials taking action on illegal dumping in Cummingsville.
Mayor David Sullivan said the County Commission had voted on a series of steps to correct the issue. Sullivan said the Sheriff went to the Cummingsville Convenience Center Wednesday in northeast Van Buren County in response to the dumping.
“Well we had purchased signs and put them on the gates a few months ago there to try and deter any dumping after hours,” Sullivan said. “So I think he has gotten involved in it at this time.”
Sullivan said the county has illegal dumping problems at other convenience center locations. He said this location has developed an ongoing issue.
Sullivan said he has heard reports that the dumping includes items in trash bags.
“We’re just told that it’s trash, so I can’t identify what all is being thrown away,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan said trash has been dumped both outside of the gated convenience center and thrown over the locked fence. He said at this time the county is not sure whether the issue is coming from an adjacent county.
“I couldn’t tell you,” Sullivan said. “But that could be possible.”
Sullivan said technology was the next step after signage and law enforcement involvement.
