Van Buren County’s Committee A is looking to increase security at the Spencer Convenience Center because of theft and other issues with the center’s camera system.
County officials said electronics were recently unplugged and a chain stolen from the office. County Commissioner Cale Crain said there is only one functioning camera at the center at this time.
“We need cameras everywhere,” Crain said. “I mean, for the safety of the people working that convenience center ’cause there’s money that’s down there. I don’t know how much money stays down there, I know they’ve got a lockbox and everything.”
County Mayor David Sullivan said he asked for the sole camera to be moved to have a better view of the convenience center’s office until more cameras are online. Crain said the office is not locked.
“That thing is unlocked,” Crain said. “I mean, there ain’t nothing in there but trash, although apparently there’s more than that.”
Commissioner Tabitha Denney said that the cameras and the server storing the footage, which is kept in the unlocked office, need to be kept in a more secure location.
“A server needs to be between two locked doors,” Denney said. “It needs to be on the back of two locked doors.”
