Van Buren Approve Health Department Remodel

The Van Buren County Commissioners approved a bid to remodel the Van Buren County Health Department Tuesday night.

County Public Health Director Angela Slaven said the $247,000 project would be completely funded through a grant. Slaven said the department could use the funding to upgrade the plumbing for the building.

“There may be some things that come into play as far as the bilge pump and things like that, that have had to be replaced I think twice in the last six months or so,” Slaven said. “And so I know that Mayor (David) Sullivan had asked them about rerouting some lines and things like that, so that money could be used towards those things in order to get the plumbing up to where it needs to be.”

Slaven said the department has a deadline to have the remodeling done by, but the 150 day deadline that was set in the bid should fit within that time frame. County Mayor David Sullivan said that if the project was not completed within the 150 days that the department can penalize the contractor.

“If he don’t have it done in that time frame they can charge him so many dollars per day,” Sullivan said.

Slaven said the department received multiple bids for the project.

“We had a huge turnout,” Slaven said. “We were really surprised at how many came out.”

In other business, commissioners approved bids for repairing the garage door for the Spencer Convenience Center and two pedestals and one window AC unit for the workers in the recycling center. Commissioners approved an annual payment of $360 per year to the Rocky River Community Center for water and building use.
