The Art Bin in Sparta is hosting a paint night February 20, with all the proceeds supporting the Upperman High School Wrestling Team.
Assistant Wrestling Coach Jessica Jackson said there are only 25 spots available to paint a canvas and support the team. She said supporting the team’s next season is important because it will be first senior class to wrestle all four years.
“Next season we will have eight seniors, so we want to help ensure that our seniors get the senior night that they deserve,” Jackson said. “We want to get some new varsity uniforms and we’ll need help travelling. We’ll need help covering travelling expenses.”
Jackson said tickets are $20 and hopes to have another paint night in March. She said the fundraising need is critical because of cancellations.
“We have had to cancel several fundraisers, due to the pandemic,” Jackson said. “For example, we usually host an in-school wrestling match but we’re not able to have the student population congregate in the gym right now. So, we had to cut out that and that’s usually our biggest fundraiser of the year.”
Jackson said the pandemic hasn’t only affected fundraising, it’s affected the wrestling season. She said that is why it matters to make the next season the best it can be.
“We just want to provide these boys who’ve been dedicated to Upperman Wrestling a great senior year,” Jackson said. “To make up for this year, the COVID year where a lot of things have changed but they’ve still been working so hard. We want them to have all the opportunities to go to tournaments because this year a lot of tournaments are cancelled. So, we’ll need extra money to make sure that we can go to all these different tournaments next season, for their senior year.”
