The Upperman Campus Community Council expects to have the Veterans Monument complete before the football season begins.
Council-Manager Eric Brown said the council will decide on a dedication date once names are on the stone columns.
“So right now, obviously all focus is on getting the monument up and getting it finished and polished up,” Brown said. “So that we have that lasting impression when people walk into the football games. Because if you think about it, we are two months away from football.”
Construction on the monument began in April.
Brown said the monument foundation is complete, allowing work to begin on a new entrance and forms for the columns.
“All that is going really well with the forming up for the concrete. The next step will be the electrical work that will be required to get everything prepared for the new LED lights that will be placed around the monument.”
Brown said the past inclement weather allowed the council to collect additional names for the monument. Brown said the monument will host approximately 575 names.
“This is huge for a lot of folks, but it is also a huge development for the students of Upperman Middle and Upperman High School,” Brown said. “Because this is also a tribute to the history that they are now a part of, being students on the Upperman campus. So we want them to be a part of that process.”
The council will use black and gray of granite to complete the columns.
