Upper Cumberland Trends On Par With State Domestic Violence Trends

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released new crime data detailing domestic violence trends across the state for 2021.

According to the report, women accounted for 71 percent of domestic-related incidents. ‘Boyfriend/Girlfriend’ was the most frequently reported relationship type for domestic-related offenses. Upper Cumberland Family Justice Center Director Amy Stockwell said it intrigued her that from 2020 to 2021, homicide numbers had decreased.

“It seems like around here that locally ours have been higher,” Stockwell said. “We’re lucky to not have been huge numbers of intimate partner homicides, but that is something we’ve been struggling with lately, you know personally, at the family justice center.”

Stockwell said in Upper Cumberland, the most common incidents are simple assault as well as aggravated assault.

The TBI reported a total of 67,590 reported incidents were flagged as domestic-related. Stockwell said she believes there are likely many more that go unreported.

“We realize that anybody can be a victim of domestic violence and there are a lot more people than they probably thought,” Stockwell said. “So if it’s one in four women or even one in three women who have experienced domestic violence in their lives, then someone likely knows someone who has been a victim of these crimes.”
