Upper Cumberland drivers will have the option of getting a Real ID license in the coming month.
Regional Manager of the Middle Tennessee Driver’s Bureau Rochelle Bryant said that the special ID is not for everyone.
“I think people are kind of getting a little antsy about it, but what people have to understand about it is that everybody in Tennessee, you’re not going to have to have the Real ID driver’s license,” Bryant said. “What you want to tell yourself, there are like four questions you need to ask yourself.”

Bryant said those who do not have a valid unexpired passport, who access military bases and nuclear plants, and plan on flying domestic, should get a Real ID.
“After the 9/11 Commission recommendations that the Federal Government sets standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as a driver’s license,” Bryant said. “So basically’ they set standards, you know, for all of the states.”
Tennessee Driver Services Centers will begin issuing the Real ID licenses on July 1.
“We know that our wait times are going to spike because we know that a lot of our citizens are going to want to come right on in on July 1st,” Bryant said. “But we want everybody to understand that there is no rush to get this.”
The Real ID will not be required until October 1, 2020.
