Upper Cumberland Counties Report Low Early Voter Turnout

Various Upper Cumberland counties reported a low early voter turnout this year.

Craig Story is the Overton County Administrator of Elections.

“I think maybe the Secretary of State’s office was putting out something maybe even today on turnout versus four years ago,” Story said. “And it is my understanding that I think we are up some statewide. Overton County I think is probably down a little bit.”

Story said 2,678 Overton citizens participated in early voting so far.

Dekalb County also reported 200 fewer early voters in comparison to the 2014 election.

According to the election commission, Dekalb had 2,258 early voters.

On the other hand, Jackson County Election Commission Administrator Clay Thaxton reported a normal voter turnout.

“Counting paper ballots, the nursing home, and in the office, 1,586 people so far,” Thaxton said. “It is right on par. It is pretty similar to actually the election we had four years ago.”

Story said overall in Tennessee, Republicans have voted more.

“In the state primary, it looks to be about 350 more Republican voters than Democratic ones right now.”

Thaxton also reported more Republican voters in Jackson County.

“We have had 820 who have voted Republican so far. And then 488 that voted Democrat,” Thaxton said. “And about 278 who have just voted in the general election and didn’t want to vote in the primary.”

Early voting ended Saturday, June 28.
