Upper Cumberland Blue Star Mothers Gear Up To Fill The Humvee

An Upper Cumberland Veterans Support Group is asking for your help in sending packages to local soldiers.

The Blue Star Mothers will host their ‘Fill The Humvee’ event Saturday from 10am-2pm at the Jackson Plaza Food Lion. Upper Cumberland Chapter President Stephanie Young said the group is made up of moms focused on supporting the military at home and abroad. Young said that the primary ways they do this is by sending care packages and sponsoring drives twice a year.

“We’re going to have a National Guard Humvee from our local armory here in town and they’re going to support us throughout the day while we’re at the Food Lion parking lot,” Young said. “And we’re just trying to give people a fun visual of collecting items.”

Young said the group meets once a month to go over their larger efforts of fundraising that require more than simply acquiring donations. Young said that the mothers in her group include birth moms, step-moms, grandmas, and guardians.

“I was down here a couple of years ago from Virginia, and I was looking to join a local Blue Star Moms group because my son is in the National Guard Army,” Young said. “And there wasn’t a group close and I really felt led to start one.”

Young said that Blue Star Moms is strictly made up of volunteers, which can cause membership to fluctuate. Young said that the Upper Cumberland chapter averages around 10-15 women at any given point.

“Obviously this time of year we’re starting to gear up for the holidays for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Young said. “Our mission is to support our kids.”

The event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. at the Jackson Plaza Food Lion off Cookeville’s West Jackson Street.
