Upgrades At Cookeville’s Fire Station 1 Under Way

City of Cookeville completed layout plans and has started work for the upgrades of Fire Station 1.

City Manager James Mills said the station located at city hall had not been upgraded for some 50 years and now requires more sleeping quarters and bathrooms. He said work has started on the chief’s office and other lower areas of the building.

“Where the chief’s office currently is will become sleeping quarters for the firefighters and so he needs to be out so they can start that work,” Mills said. “Trying to do the work while the station is occupied will be cumbersome to our firefighters, and they know that, but we have to keep that station open.”

Mills said once this project is completed they will look at doing upgrades to Fire Stations 2 and 3. He said the architect is currently working on Station 2 trying to determine if it is more feasible to tear down and rebuild or to just remodel.

Mills said they will not start any construction or renovation on Station 2 until the next fiscal year.
