Underclassmen Reflect on Residential-Life Excitement

As students and families unloaded their cars across Tennessee Tech campus, many students experienced dorm-life for the first time.

Freshman Journey Hargrove moved into Pinkerton Hall today with her family’s help.

Hargrove said she does not feel nervous about the next step in her life as a nursing major.

“I’m ready to go,” Journey said. “Meeting new people and just making new memories.”

Journey’s mother, Debbie Iten said moving her daughter to campus brings sadness, fear, but mostly excitement.

“I wish she would stay out of trouble, study hard,” Iten said. “Keep herself organized and have a lot of fun.”

Bryan Hargrove, Journey’s father, said he wishes his daughter would stay focused.

“Just keep studying and hopefully I don’t have to come to pick her up in a month,” Hargrove said. “She’s a smart girl, she can figure a lot of it out.”

For returning students, the familiarity makes move-in day go smoother.

Sophomore Jacob Thompson said he didn’t have many problems moving into Murphy Hall today.

“Parking mostly,” Jacob said. “But, people were very helpful so that was a great thing.”

Jacob moved in with the help of his family, including his father, Paige Thompson.

Thompson said the second year alleviates some move-in challenges overall.

“I think the familiarity is the biggest difference. I think the process here is run very smoothly. As Jacob mentioned, the students are all very helpful,” Thompson said. “You show up the car is unloaded in minutes. So that works out really well. Just the familiarity of knowing where things are and kind of understanding the process a little better.”

New and returning students all feel excited about different parts of campus life.

Sophomore Civil and Environmental Engineering student Casey Tyene said she doesn’t feel nervous, but excited about the campus food.

“The people and the cafeteria,” Tyene said. “The cafeteria workers are super friendly.”

Jacob said he felt most excited about the soft serve on campus.

Tennessee Tech’s Great Move-in Day started today at 10 AM and will end at 10 PM.
