UCHRA will introduce a new water assistance program to the region this new year.
Community Services Assistant Director Megan Spurgeon said similar to its air and heating program, Upper Cumberland residents could receive relief for water bills.
“We can now use this water program to address water needs and wastewater needs of our communities,” Spurgeon said. “We served several hundred homes last year with water, so we are excited to do that again this upcoming year with the new Low Income Housing Water Assistance Program.”
Spurgeon said the program funded by Federal COVID money will start as short-term. Spurgeon said an exact dollar amount has not been shared, but the money should be substantial.
Spurgeon said well water will not qualify for assistance. Spurgeon said applications can be found at your local UCHRA office when the program begins.
“We’ll need information on the last 12 months for water usage for the home, as well as income information for the home, supporting documentation for citizenship, as well as a few other pieces of documentation,” Spurgeon said. “We’re hoping we can do the LIHEAP application and the water application at the same time.”
Spurgeon said the water assistance will replace a former program. Spurgeon said the funding from the previous assistance will transition to rent assistance.
