UC Schools Offering Free Meals For Students This Summer

The Overton County School System will once again offer free meals for students this summer.

School Nutrition Supervisor Debie Taylor said the meals come through a USDA program that begins May 31st.

“When school is out, a lot of times they don’t have meals daily and on a regular basis,” Taylor said. “This way the USDA they make sure that they get a USDA reimbursable meal just like they would at school.”

The services is available for most Upper Cumberland school systems. Taylor said the program reimburses nutrition programs for the meals distributed over a one month period.

In Overton County, Taylor said students can receive breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday at Livingston Academy. Taylor said nutrition workers also deliver in a two-mile radius.

“Such as Livingston Pool, the library, places like that where we know there are students, and a lot of times parents take them there where they spend the day,” Taylor said. “Sometimes meals are not provided so we go and take meals for those children. That’s always been a hit.”
